Chen Ding Nan, the first non-KMT magistrate of Yilan County, is highly regarded for his efforts in fighting corruption, abolishing “the martial law of thinking”, cracking down on industrial pollution, and not allowing the sixth naphtha cracker to be built in Yilan, because of the potential pollution it would bring. Following his death in 2006, the Chen Ding Nan Memorial Park was established as a means to pass on the values he represented. This museum displays personal items that reflect his strength of character. The Chen Ding Nan Educational Foundation was set up to teach about democracy and about the local area. It organizes local excursions around Sanxing, special exhibitions, human rights activities, as well as student camping activities to ensure that the spirit of justice for which Chen stood would continue to be passed down.
