Because it was so difficult to get to Yilan and Hualien years ago, this area was referred to as “houshan”, i.e., “behind the mountains”. In order to make access to these areas easier and safer, a great deal of physical and mental energy went into building a road that went through mountains and other rough terrain. Displays at the Mountain Highway Museum are designed to celebrate those who dedicated themselves to this worthy task and to give later generations a glimpse at the work that went into it. So come visit the museum and be amazed at their great accomplishments.
