Built in 1928 and covering more than 3,000 square meters, this is the last remaining Erjie Farmers Association rice barn from the period of Japanese occupation in Yilan. During World War Two, the Erjie Farmers Association was responsible for purchasing rice from the large swath of agricultural land south of the Lanyang River. After milling the rice, it would have it transported to different locations around Taipei or to Keelung where it would be exported to Japan or Southeast Asia.
Local residents and the Daerjie Cultural Promotion Association (predecessor of the Daerjie Cultural Foundation) fought to save it and, in 1998, it was designated a county historical site. In addition to featuring fun and thought-provoking displays, the barn, a five-minute walk from Erjie Station, offers specialty drinks and light meals. You won’t want to miss the barn with its rich smell of grain.
