When the people of Guishan Island weren’t fishing, they enjoyed games like “da cunzi” (打寸子), in which they hit an inch-long peg with a small bat, and competing to see who could fly their 72-point kite the highest. Later, because it was difficult to get to and from Guishan and because of the island’s strategic importance, the military relocated residents to what is today referred to as Guishan Community located on Taiwan proper.
Residents could see the island off in the distance, but could not return. Jian Yingjun (簡英俊) took it upon himself to create the Fishing Village Cultural Museum on behalf of other residents, so they would not forget their roots.
Once a story is told, it continues to be told. Join us as we remember all that is wonderful about Guishan Island.
