Dongshan is known for kites, because teachers at Dongshan Elementary School, such as Li Hourui, enthusiastically promoted the activity, taking students to national kite competitions and returning home victorious on numerous occasions.

To educate the public about kites, the Dongshan Kite Museum was set up in a new building on the Dongshan Elementary School campus to display over 1,000 kites created by teachers and students as well as other interesting kites from around the world. Nearby scenic spots, like Forest Park, Dongshan Dongshan River Water Park, and Wulaokeng, are excellent places to fly kites.
