In 1991, work on the Hsuehshan Tunnel began and in 2006, the tunnel was opened to traffic. This museum focuses on the 15 years of arduous work that went into this project as well as the work that went in the building of the National Highway Number 5. You can see displays on the mainline and the pilot tunnel as well as a model and a cross-sectional view of the tunnel boring machine (TBM). The museum also has displays covering the construction process, how various geological conditions were dealt with, as well as how safety and environmental protection was monitored.
Today, we enjoy the convenience offered by the Hsuehshan Tunnel only because thousands of workers toiled to bore through tough szuling sandstone, geological faults, shear zones, and artesian groundwater. Visit the Hsuehshan Tunnel Museum and learn just how hard-fought was the battle to win the convenience that we enjoy every day.
